This Italian book is beautifully printed and illustrated. The drawings are very detailed and great fun to see. You don't see this kind of detail on the F1 TV broadcasts as teams often try to keep their latest changes away from the cameras. The text was originally written in Italian. The English translation often leaves something to be desired and the reader not infrequently has to study it for a moment to work out what the author, filtered through translators who may not be that technically astute, is trying to say.Sometimes the text doesn't quite match the drawings, or vise versa. The book is obviously prepared in a rush to get it out soon after the F1 season is over.Nevertheless, this is the best technical overview I've found. This is fourth season I've bought one. Recommended if you don't mind the occasional bit of confusion.
The Formula1: Technical Analysis 2011/2012 is translated from Italian probably by someone who is not a native English speaker. While the text is fairly clear, word usage can be somewhat strange. Another flaw appears to be with call-outnumbers and arrows in the illustrations that are sometimes not referenced in the text. Perhaps they are in the Italian edition, but not here. These criticisms aside, this is a fascinating book for the fan of the technical side of Formula 1, probably the most technically complex form of motor racing. All of the illustrations are color drawings, probably done on a computer, and are very clear and detailed. Occasionally a detail of interest is too small to be really seen well.So far as I can tell, no other yearbook covering the technical aspects of F1 is available in English in the US. Flawed or not, Iwill certainly be buying next year's issue and urge F1 fans to at least have a look at this unique publication.
Another great illustration by Piola and his team. This volume had a significant amount more typos and translation errors than others i've purchased, but not a huge problem. There were about 2-4 bullet points that weren't translated at all which required me to do some translation, but in some cases it only helps me in learning a bit of Italian :).Surprisingly not that many insights on the controversial technical developments of this years formula compared to the 2010-11 and 2012-13 volumes.
If you are looking to see what is under the complex aerodynamic coverings, you can't do better than this series of books from Giorgio Piola. He has been doing technical illustrations on F1 since I can remember, so this series of books just put all of that great material from each year into one book, or rather 15, since that is how long this series has been going on. Without checking each week to see what the teams have brewed up, this reviews all the evolution and revolution in design through the year. The illustrations are detailed enough to really show those tiny modifications that are incorporated from race to race, so if this is something you really want to understand, you can't find anything better.Ya gotta be a bit OCD to really like it, but that is what this stuff is all about, don't you think?Very good stuff.Tom West
This is a review of the 2011-2012 season and what the teams did to their cars. Very nice drawings (no photos) and no doubt very interesting to the knowledgeable reader who keeps up with the sport. But this is not an introduction to F1 technology, which is probably the most sophisticated of any motor sport. Many of the terms and comments were Greek to me, and I'm a builder of hot rods. F1 aerodynamics is a critical part of performance, and some of the references had me baffled.
Very useful for F-1 research
I got this as a Christmas present for my husband. He has enjoyed it so much he wants me to get the next years book. I can tell that my husband has enjoyed the book as he seems to really get in ti it as he reads.
I absolutely love this book. Shows you the changes to aero from last year. Being very interested in aerodynamics this book is a fun read.
